Live-In Program

Fayetteville Fire & EMS Live-In Program provides unparalleled exposure to the fire service for those students who are considering a career in public service or for those who simply desire a unique college experience. The program, which has been in existence for over 10 years, offers free in-quarters living accommodations for qualifying college students in exchange for volunteer fire and EMS service throughout the course of the academic year. For any students who are new to the fire service, our cadre of state-certified instructors works aggressively to provide the required minimum training (i.e., Firefighter I, FAST, etc.) within a student’s first year. For experienced firefighters and EMS providers, live-in members will also benefit from the daily training that occurs while on shift.

The live-in program accepts students studying at local colleges and universities, including Onondaga Community College, SUNY Upstate Medical University, LeMoyne College, and Syracuse University.

The live-in program accepts students studying at local colleges and universities, including Onondaga Community College, SUNY Upstate Medical University, LeMoyne College, and Syracuse University. Preference is given to students enrolled in related programs, such as the Fire Protection Technology Program at Onondaga Community College or the Paramedic Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University, but students from all degree programs are welcome to apply. Live-in firefighters enjoy a dedicated bunkroom with its own living area and bathroom, as well as dedicated space within the firehouse kitchen.

Depending on their class schedule, students will be assigned to a minimum of one shift per week providing them ample hands-on experience on a schedule that works for them. This may include daytime shifts with predominantly career personnel, evening shifts with mostly volunteer personnel or both. Regardless of schedule, live-in members are treated like regular department members and enjoy full access to all department-sponsored events.

As a testament to the experience gained by students enrolled in the program, approximately 75% of former students are currently employed as career firefighters and EMTs, both locally and out of state. The Fayetteville Fire & EMS Live-In program provides a unique opportunity for dedicated individuals to further their personal education while gaining fire and EMS training and serving the citizens of Eastern Onondaga County as a member of one of the busiest fire departments in central New York.
